Books Make Me Happy, Pop Culture Shenanigans

Books and TV…the SERIOUS Issues.

shiver1Let’s Talk About TV and Books!

So! I first stumbled upon Maggie Stielvater when I accidentally started an unfinished series. I really enjoyed the two books in that series, and really liked the next stand-alone book I read of hers Scorpio Races.

But then I switched to her finished series Shiver. And I had vague memories of trying the book before and not getting into it, but even as I started it, I had no memories of it…so I soldiered on. But y’all? I couldn’t finish it. I’m so upset! I had hoped I had found a new favorite author…but I just couldn’t stick with it. I think part of it was the story was too much about the love/attraction and not much about any other lore or plotline with this fantasy world. Also, the chapters jumped back and forth between perspectives which isn’t a big deal, her other books did that, but these chapters were really short. So it was giving me whiplash! I ended up taking it back to the library this week, unfinished.

But I’m so bummed! I loved the other books and I LOVE LOVE LOVE her on Twitter, but I could NOT get into Shiver.

arrowNow! Let’s talk about some TV I’m totally loving. First is an old show that I’m just loving more this season than last. And it’s even getting some good critical accolades too! ARROW. Y’all! It’s just so good! Are you watching it? I love Felicity and how big of a part they’re giving her this season. I love love LOVE the introduction of Flash (I think he’s getting his own show, actually) the last too episodes. And I love that they ditched a lot of the annoying storylines (Sarah returning? BOO.) because they weren’t working. I love that the actors or SO VERY PRETTY. Last season was good but this season is GREAT.

almost-human-cast2And finally? A new show I’m loving. Almost Human! Are you watching it? SO GOOD! The dialog us funny but the stories are interesting and great. Good action. Good special effects. GREAT chemistry between the actors…LOVE IT! It also adds a fun twist on the crime-solving drama with the weirdo tech advances they feature. I love it! Probably my new favorite show!

So…books? Shows? What are you loving?

  1. Almost Human, you mean. there is a show Being Human, but it’s something else! I love Almost Human. Kennex is yummy.

  2. Drat! We meant to watch Almost Human when it started but we had to DVR it and for some reason the second part of the pilot didn’t record. So we never watched it. I love Karl Urban( and his flaring nostrils) and have since The Lord of the Rings.

I enjoy Maggie Stiefvater’s books. Have you tried any of her earlier stuff, from before Shiver? It’s been a long time since I read that, so I can’t remember if the story-building was better. Have you read Code Name, Verity or Rose Under Fire? Both are incredible if rather bleak, although Verity is the best.

  3. I am currently in the midst of Wally Lamb’s We Are Water, but it is bit of a chore to get through compared to his other novels. Of all the comedies on Tuesday night (and I watch and enjoy a bunch of them),The Mindy Project makes me laugh out loud the most.

  4. Love Arrow and the words that came out Felicity’s mouth, too funny! Another show I love is Orphan Black, can’t wait for it when it returns in April.

  5. Forgot to mention my top 3 tv shows right now are: The Blacklist, Sherlock, and The Originals.

  6. LOVE Orphan Black. And Sherlock. I don’t know how I’m going to watch either now that we don’t have cable. I don’t think either hit hulu or amazon prime 🙁

  7. ALMOST HUMAN is def one of our new faves! i can’t add any more new ones right now b/c we’re about to start watching veronica mars since none of us ever saw it when it was on, even though i always wanted to!

  8. YOU MUST TEXT ME EVERY DAY AND TELL ME HOW MUCH YOU LOVE IT! Well, I loved Season 1 and have watched it 3+ times all the way through. I tolerated season 2 and only re-watched a few episodes. I loved Season 3 and re-watched it the most recently. Keep me posted!

  9. I love love LOVED The Raven Boys and The Scorpio Races too, but really did NOT love Shiver. I listened to it on audio and was considering trying the next book in the series in print in case it was just the overly-angsty audio production that turned me off. However, your mention of the book here makes me more inclined to just let it go and focus on other books that I’m more likely to love.

  10. You should be able to watch Sherlock on pbs.org’s Masterpiece site. They have the current shows up for online viewing for a short time after the episode airs. The first episode of Season airs Sunday, so it should be up next week.

  11. Ugh. I tried to read Shiver too, and had the exact same “meh” feelings about it. Glad it’s not just me! I am currently loving on Melina Marchetta’s Lumatere Chronicles. I’m re-reading the first, Finnikin of the Rock, and just scored the 2nd, Froi of the Exiles, on Kindle for $1.99! YAY! And I just found out that now there is a third. But each can be read as a stand-alone book, I think (somewhat like the Graceling series, which I big pink puffy heart too!)
