Uncharted Territory

The Zoot Family got on the road this weekend and headed to Auburn, AL to see my sister-in-law graduate from college. I’ve only been here a few times in my life and really don’t know much about the campus apart from the little bit I saw the day I visited my sister-in-law four years ago.

I woke up about 5:30am, put on my shoes, and ran without a route in mind.

This is the first time I’ve ever done this, as a runner. Just put on my shoes and started running. I turned on Runkeeper on my phone so I could track my distance, and other than that? I just kept running. I weaved in and out of quads and around buildings. I kept my sights on the stadium and made several loops around that point as it was one place I knew I could find my way back to my hotel from.

Because – trust me – if anyone was going to get lost half a miles from her hotel? It would be me.

It was about 40 degrees and drizzling. I had no idea where I was going, I didn’t know what I’d find when I turned the next corner, and I just kept running.

I created boundaries for myself, went as far in several directions away from the stadium as I was comfortable. Then I weaved in and out of campus using those boundaries. (For those of you who know the area, I used College Street, Samford and Magnolia as my limits.) I had a general distance I was aiming for (4-5 miles) and just ran around until Runkeeper told me I had made it that far.

SO MUCH FUN.

I know that I’m a Crimson Tide fan by marriage, but the runner in me really enjoyed spending time in Eagle Territory today.

  1. SO COOL! I abandoned my timer for the 5K this weekend and found that at least in a race situation, I’m pretty good at pushing myself.

  2. Sarah Lena – Huntsville, AL – Sarah Lena has been writing online since the internet was born, or at least since it was cruising around living room furniture and drooling on everything. Her personal blog, The Anvil Tree, is where she basically moans and kvetches on a regular basis. Sarah Lena's deep love of pop culture knows no bounds, and there is no reality show she won't touch, no child-star she won't coax into rehab, and no Gosselin she won't awkwardly try and defend a little.
    Sarah Lena says:

You would be hard-pressed to find a more loyal Tide fan than myself, but I LOVE THE AUBURN CAMPUS. We had All-State Choir there every year growing up and I loved the lush greens and the sprawl of the buildings.

  3. Yay, you were right in my neck of the woods! And you managed to see the prettiest part of town, too. Samford Hall is my favorite campus building (though I know most people prefer the stadium…).

  4. brave girl! i love doing stuff like this — makes me feel like a stud. I have never visited your part of the country, but it’s on my list. hardly ever leave the west coast.
