Pop Culture Shenanigans

Riddikulus.

When I was in college we used to have a lot of parties and dinners because I was young and confident and not at all worried about what guests thought of my home. Plus, they were all college students too so their standards were low. Since then we’ve had about ZERO parties that involve anyone outside of family. We always talk about having them, but just never have gotten around to planning anything due to the nineteen million excuses we have to fall back on.

Tonight? It’s PARTY TIME. E and I finally put together a Harry Potter Party which we’ve been talking about doing for every book and movie release since we got into them a decade ago. And tonight? It’s finally happening. I’ve put a lot of thought and effort into the details and I thought I’d share a few with you since I got only three hours sleep last night working on some of it. I’ve had SO much fun it’s not even funny. Wait. Did that make sense? Anyway…Harry Potter Party Prep? FUN.

I made 10 of these spell banners around the house. It’s part of a Spell Hunt Game I made. It has a beginner version where you get a handout with the EFFECTS of the spells on them and you just find the spell around the house that fits, and the advanced where you just tell me yourself what they do. I did it this way for the younger fans and the “I Haven’t Read The Books In Five Years” fans like my husband. If you complete it successfully? You get this:

Stuff For Our Premiere Party

OOPS. I spelled “Conjunction” wrong. Didn’t I? Crap. Well, you get the point. I’ll print more of those up later. DAMMIT. This is what happens when you type at 2am.

ANYWAY…I printed THAT on this great scroll paper so it looks all magical and such. (Good thing I have extra for the reprint.) Here are some other teaser photos of snacks and favors and decorations.

Oh…and one more thing: I DYED MY HAIR BLACK. It’s just temporary but it’s for my Bellatrix Lestrange costume. I can’t wait to show you all of the pictures after it all comes together. If all goes well tonight? We may have another party around Christmas because I’ve had so much fun putting all of this together I’m already wondering what excuse I can come up with for another gathering. I’m thinking Ugly Christmas Sweater Party!

  1. Kim. I think that you are amazing. What amazing detail! When you talk about lack of confidence, social anxiety, etc, I have to tell you that I never thought that once back in the KCHS days. MAYBE because my confidence was worse, whatever, I don’t know. However, I always thought you were smart and funny and I totally wish I could come to your party. I’m on #5 right now so I’m loving the “Weasely Is My King” button.

  2. 5. I don’t know what you are talking about! You are so creative and such a party planner! Love all the details. I can’t wait to see the pictures later and have a great time!

  6. LOVE IT! Everything looks wonderful. I especially love the labels on the Mason jars. Have a blast, you crazy kids!

  7. WOW – you are amazing. Have fun tonight…and I’m totally there for the ugly christmas sweater party:)

  8. So fun! I wish that a.) I knew you IRL, b.) you’d invite me to your party, & c.) I lived close enough to come. I can’t wait to see pics. Unfortunately I don’t think I’m going to make it to opening night, much less opening weekend as we’ll be travelling for Thanksgiving. Boo.

  9. Are those labels from the Film Wizadry book? I wish I lived near you, I would totally crash your party! Also, is it weird that I thought of you when I purchased the Film Wizardry book? I would not have known it existed if not for your heads up. It is awesome!

Question, did you re-read DH in preparation for the movie? I haven’t, but am thinking about skimming it a bit tonight…..your thoughts?

  10. I am so jealous! Everything looks wonderful. I think I may have to do the same thing when part 2 comes out this summer!!

Have fun and I can’t wait to see the pictures. We are going tomorrow after work. YAY!!

  11. Oh my! I wish I lived closer, or knew you better so I could just hop on a plane and come visit!

Perhaps you could set up a webcam (assuming you have one… if not take a photo every so often and post it!) so your fans could peek in on the party. Being 2 time zones away means you’ll be rockin’ when I’m getting home from work. 🙂

  12. This looks amazing, Kim! I am a wee bit jealous, and wish I lived closer (so I could be, you know, the total stranger at your party?)

    Have fun!

  13. Oh I almost wish I could fly down to Alabama just for your totally awesome party! You’re so rad, Kim. Looks like when you decide to do a party, you do so with gusto!

  14. OMG!!! I want to come! The biggest thing planned for today is my my facebook status countdown (yes I am lame). Midnight can not come fast enough!

  15. Oh. My. Gosh. So fun! I’m equally excited about the movie…I love that you’re having a party!

  16. it just seems ALL SORTS OF WRONG that i can’t be there for it all tonight! you’ve done a fabulous job, girl…not that there was EVER any doubt!

    yay for tonight!

    xoxoxo

  17. L.O.V.E. IT!

I don’t know which to be more jealous of, that you throw such an awesome party or that you can do it on a THURSDAY! When did I get so old that parties are only for Fridays and Saturdays?

  18. Okay. I’m inviting myself over, catching a last minute flight to Huntsville and crashing this party. HOLY CRAP. Seriously. Looks like it will be FANTASTIC!

  19. I think its so awesome that you actually have enough friends who like Harry Potter that you can have a party! If I had a party, it would be me and my sister! So, so excited for HP. Sucks that we have no midnight showing though :(.

  20. What a great idea! Everything looks so good. I want to reach through the screen and grab one of those magic wand pretzels–so cute! Hope the party was a great success! Can’t wait to see your pictures.
