Is This What They Call A Staycation?

As many of you know, one of LilZ’s BFFs from birth is visiting for two weeks. He has two BFFs since Birth and one of them lives here in Huntsville while the other moved out to Seattle a few years ago. She comes to visit every summer for two weeks and the three of them are reunited like they were never apart. I’ve never known anyone to grow up with the kind of friendship these three have. The other Moms and I always struggle to explain it to other people. They’re all about to start high school, two girls, one boy. And when they reunited on Monday? The first they did was embrace and then hold hands into the restaurant we were going for breakfast.

Kids
The three of them on my wedding day. The girls were Junior Bridesmaids.

When did they get so big?
Two days ago. Still just as close.

The excess teenagers in my life this week has been what has kept me more absent from the blog than normal. They’re kinda fun to hang out with so I’m staying up later chatting and I even let one of them do my makeup the other night. FUN! I’m suddenly seeing what I have to look forward to with NikkiZ. Someone to doll me up!

We wanted to do something fun this weekend, but traveling with a group that size is expensive. So, we have opted to travel to a local hotel! Tonight and Saturday night we’re staying at a local hotel that is embedded in an outdoor shopping center. This will allow the teenagers to wander around on their own some while NikkiZ and I swim in the hotel pool. (I’m leaving MrZ at home with AndyZ for the weekend. MrZ is looking forward to a quiet house for two days!) We’re going to eat at the fancy restaurants and see movies and probably still spend less money than if we had traveled for the weekend. And since we’re close to home MrZ and AndyZ will be able to come swim and eat some meals with us.

NikkiZ is so excited she told everyone at school about it this morning. She told me I needed to pack ALL of our things because, “We’re not ever coming back home!” She evidently has plans to relocate to the hotel permanently. She told MrZ, “I’m sorry you can’t come with us, Daddy.” She used that tone that implied, “You know…because this is for big kids only.” She followed me around all morning making sure I packed her pajamas and her brush and her dresses and her…you get the picture. This trip started as a treat for the teenagers but I think a certain 3-year-old is going to have the most fun of all!

  1. Their friendship makes me misty eyed. NikkiZ sounds like she is going to be a lot of fun this weekend.

I’m going on a walk through the Photo District of NYC which is connected to Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk. I’m nervous, but excited. Put me in a business situation and I can interact and mingle like you would not believe. Put me in a personal social situation with 50 strangers and I’m socially awkward. Cross your fingers for me, please.

    Have a great time.

  2. OMG I hardly even recognize Lauren! It’s hard to believe that those are the little kids I’ve known for about 10 years. I’m starting to feel old. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Wow, they’ve really grown up from that first photo! It’s great that they are still so close. I’m still close with a few friends from elementary/middle school… there really is a special bond with those people who’ve seen you grow up.

Sounds like this weekend is going to be so much fun!

  4. I have 2 boy BFF from that age. We all live apart now but when we do see other watch out! It is really a gift tell lilZ to never let it go.

This weekend I am doing nothing but garden and lolly gag aroung the house and it is going to be great.

    Have FUN!

  5. That is so sweet that they have been friends for so long. Those binds are hard to break!! ๐Ÿ™‚ Have lots of fun this weekend, sounds like a good time!

I get to babysit most of the weekend. (that includes helping how the boys in the band I help out because sometimes that is like babysitting as well) LOL

  6. Your weekend away sounds so fun and smart. You’re the best mom!

I love those two pictures – I keep going back and trying to figure out which girl grew up to which one and which one now lives in Seattle. As if you can tell who lives in Seattle based on their clothing?..

  7. “Staycation” – I love it!

I also love the friendship of the 3…how wonderful for them to have such a strong friendship! Makes me wonder where some of my close childhood friends are…

And yes, NikkiZ…don’t you? It’s all about her! Beans is the same way!

  8. i am so jealous i could pop!!!

when i saw your new pix the other day it prompted me to find other old ones of all three of them i had on my work computer, and i came up with the one of them (w/ colin) from ariel’s 4th bday (on the hottest freaking day of the year). and i’ve welled up several times while looking at them through the years.

i thought i was done with that until your post today, damn you!

those 3 are so blessed, for sure…just like you, stac, and i are, too!

  9. What a great story! My husband has one or two ‘from birth’ friends, I don’t, but my son will. It’s awesome. I am doing something WAY less fun this weekend and moving, so have some fun for me!

  10. That is too cool for words. Love the pictures of them. We were doing “dive-in movies” tonight in the backyard (wading pool, movies on the laptop, cooler full of beer and sodapops) but idiot neighbors were being rowdy and rude and kind of ruined it. We’ll be over it by… oh, wait, we’re already over it!

I think we’re going to ride bikes and play. The hotel sounds fun, enjoy it. Your daughter is obviously a City Child who wants to live at the Plaza.

  11. Those photos are great. I especially love the recent one. It’s beautiful!

Have a ton of fun with them!

  12. Oh. My. Goodness!!! For some reason I still expected “little girl” looking girls, not beautiful young ladies! And don’t get me started on LilZ! When did this all happen?? He’s so grown up!

Their long-standing friendship is something to be envied. I hope they stay close for their entire lives!

  13. Those pictures are beautiful. Their friendship is also a thing of beauty. Generally, I don’t prefer kids past a certain age when they acquire that teen angst and attitude. You don’t see any of that in that picture, just good friends. Beautiful.
