The One Where I Bad-Mouth A Four-Year Old

b_001first5KI survived my 5K yesterday! I even finished under 40 minutes which was my hope but since I had been training on a treadmill in the air-conditioning, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to run the whole thing. But I did! I ran the whole thing! I will say that I experienced a first with this race, the walker/sprinter. There were a few people right around my pace who would walk for a distance and I would pass them. Then they would sprint and pass me. And so on…and so forth. As the person who is running straight it gets very depressing to get passed by the same person several times.

Especially when they’re four.

Seriously! There was a Dad and his four-year old daughter doing the sprint/walk thing right around me for the entire race. I’ve learned to not focus on the people passing me. I would make myself crazy thinking about the people more overweight than I am, or older, or carrying inhalers. Some people are faster. Period. I just learned to not think about it. But a four-year old? Passing me FIVE TIMES? Bah. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t trying to pass her when I sprinted to the finish line. Unfortunately, she was sprinting too and she left me eating her dust. Damn kids.

Here are other pics from the weekend that don’t involve me cursing out pre-schoolers.

  1. I was once beat… not just beat, but crushed… in a 10k by a very obviously pregnant woman.

My boyfriend ran a 5k a few weeks back and he was beat by an 11-year-old girl… and he runs 3 minutes per mile faster than I do!

  2. I was one of the (very stupid) sprinter/walker peeps up there. For whatever STUPID reason, I thought, “Hey, why don’t I RUN up these hills?”

I wish I had your stamina!

We really should run together. If I had actually paced myself, we’d come in very close to the same speed!

(And my face? Totally tomato as well. I always freak people out in the gym.)

  3. those walker/runner drive me crazy..but we used to train like tha tin college because technically you can run walk forever..but stilll I want to trip them!

    my face gets read too..nice

  4. She’s cute enough to get away with it and if she has her smiling brother with her they will carry the flowers for her.

Who is the man in the last photo with you and lounging on the wicker furniture?

  5. Dude, forget the 4-year-old. YOU RAN A 5K. That is a full 4.75K more than most people, I think.

    (you rock. end of story.)

  6. My face gets really red when I run/work out too. I look like I’m going to turn into a red version of the Hulk.

  7. Congrats! I’m just starting running (have a 5K this summer, and a half marathon Labor Day weekend), and I’ve been loving reading over your old training posts….also? My face gets crazy red, too, and stays that way for a long time.

  8. I wish my face only got as red as yours…and on top of the redness, it DOESN’t go away.

One time I made the mistake of taking a spinning class before work…my face was red until lunch.

    Congratulations on your run!

  9. Congratulations! I’m also coming back from a running break due to baby/nursing. I don’t want to be that mother who shows up in maternity clothes from her 25-year-old.

The Couch Potato to 5K was a good program for me. I modified mine so I would take every other week off (due to kid illness/laziness).

    Love your blog!
