Thing 3, Wes's Birth

Puking with an abdomen wound is AWESOME.

Wow. The last c-section (with NikkiZ) I was extremely nauseous but I blamed a lot of that on the events of the day. Emotions and drugs were high while sleep was low. Today – it turns out – that’s just the way I react to anesthesia. I spent most of my post-delivery time visiting with family, and then pausing to either dry heave or puke. Depending on how good of a mood my body was in. The puking wasn’t too bad as I haven’t eat anything since 9pm on Tuesday, but still: Any Form Of Gagging Post-Csection Hurts. In case that hadn’t occurred to you. It hadn’t occurred to me. Because I am NAIVE.

I also was not given a morphine pump immediately. Because, evidently, I don’t need one? I get some sort of non-narcotic anti-inflammatory meds instead? HOW LAME IS THAT? Eventually, I did get my pump (6+ hours later) but you know what? Turns out those doctors know what they’re doing. I’ve only pushed the button once. The Anti-inflammatory stuff has been fine for me and the pain. Go figure.

The last dose of Zofran (the nausea med) seems to actually be working as I now find myself painfully hungry and unable to sleep. Which is a perfect time to blog!

Shit. I have just written like 10 paragraphs and not once mentioned my gorgeous new son. Like any of you care about my nausea, who am I kidding?

He is doing great. He has quite an arsenal of hilarious grumpy expressions which crack us up non-stop. He screamed for his first several hours outside my womb (which I don’t blame him for, just minding his own damn business when someone yanks him out) but when it was time to eat? He latched like a champ and has been peaceful ever since. I LOVE BABIES WHO NURSE WELL. It makes it easier on Moms who don’t produce milk well.

He looks a lot like my Dad right now, which is a point MrZ made and then I had to agree. (Dear Dad: This picture is not very flattering, he looks like you in a GOOD way, I promise!) Of course, then he’ll throw out these insane brow furrows and scowls and he simply looks like a VERY grumpy old man in the park trying to feed the pigeons that keep flying away because those annoying teenagers keep scaring them with their skateboarding.

Or maybe that’s the anti-inflammatory meds talking? Can’t even blame the morphine this time.

All in all? We’re good. LilZ (obviously) saw AndyZ today, NikkiZ will see him tomorrow (Thursday) as soon as I’m well enough to get out of bed. I don’t want to scare her by being strapped to a gurney when she walks in. Hopefully, we’ll upload more pictures as the day goes on. And hopefully someone will bring me SOME FOOD. Or not. If I’m puking. Maybe they should call first.

  1. Am I first?
He is gorgeous!! Hope you are feeling better now that the anethesia has worn off. I can’t wait to hear what NikkiZ thinks of her new brother now that he is here.

    Love to you all.

  2. Congratulations! He looks very cute and I am so glad, that everything went well (and that you are even hungry now 🙂 Would bring you breakfast, but that would be a little difficult. With me living in Germany and all…

  3. Oh, he is beautiful. Congratulations again!

I would bring you Mexican if I didn’t live in NYC.

  4. He is beautiful! I too would bring breakfast if I weren’t in GA. (and if it wasn’t creepy since I don’t know you, etc.)

  5. He’s lovely!!!

My phone stopped recieving updates from Twitter. I got the one about Baby was here but other than that didn’t hear any more :(.

    Congratulations!!!!!!

  6. I already said this over at Flickr when you posted the first pics, but I’ll say it again: Congratulations!

  7. I hear you with the anesthesia and puking thing. Though for me, it turned out to be less the anesthesia and more the pain meds they had me on after. WHOOPS!

And your tiny little grumpy old man is adorable! I’ll add my voice to the chorus of congratulations!!!

  8. He’s absolutely PERFECT. Just beautiful Zoot. I’m hoping you are feeling better now. Off to go look at all the pictures.

  9. Awwww. Congratulations!!!

(on the baby, not the puking…. just so we’re clear)

  10. Oh dear god is he beautiful!! Congratulations! And I hope the nausea goes away….just thinking of not having eaten for that long makes ME nauseated never mind like major surgery or anything.

  11. I just realized….how big is he? Length, weight??? Um, and I have to say again (and for the record this is like my third comment – between here and flickr – in the past 5 minutes….and I cannot promise it’ll be my last for the day) he is just so freakin’ ADORABLE. Also, I can’t help but notice that he looks a little like Kristin’s (from BetterNow) cutie of a son Nolan.

  12. Congrats! He is sooo cute. Makes me miss one–bad! Hope you get to eat soon, and that you start feeling better fast.

  13. he’s perfect. and that’s comming from a woman who feels her child walks on water and poops rainbows 🙂

  14. LOVE the crinkly old man looks.. they’re so much fun! Congratulations on the newest member of your beautiful family.

  15. Congratulations! He is beautiful. Love the grumpy face.

My s-i-l is due the same date you were, and are heading to the hospital today. Yay for new babies!

  16. OH OH OH OH OH OH OH A BABY!

Also puking, but mostly A BABY!

Many congratulations to you and your family.

  17. So adorable. As I was looking at the pictures last night I completely thought he has little old man expressions in his face!

Rest, Relax, and Enjoy these magical moments.

  18. Congratulations! Why am I always surprised and excited by the smallness of newborns?! Hope you feel better soon 🙂

  19. Congratulations on a beautiful baby boy! And I am glad he is latching on good, the nursing is so stressful! But if it works it is wonderful.

  20. He’s beautiful! I’m not a regular commenter but during my average-nothing-special-day yesterday I kept thinking – Zoot is having a baby today! It made the day a little more special 🙂 Best wishes from Chicago!!

  21. Congratulations again Zoot! He’s beautiful. I can’t wait to hear NikkiZ’s reaction to him :).

  22. Oh I love grumpy old men babies! They are so cute. And it’s way better when they are boys. (Kind of scare for girls)

Here’s hoping that by now the puking has stopped and your on that awesome liquids diet they like to stick you on at first. Wahoo Jello!!

    Congrats!

  23. He is absolutely beautiful. Congrats on the birth of your beautiful tiny grumpy old man! 🙂

  24. What a lovely baby! And I was just thinking about the fact that you/he made it to a happy ending. Or, rather, beginning.
I feel you on the post-abdominal surgery pain. I’m not a puker, not even through pregnancy. But after emergency c-section was the first time I puked in twenty years. Ouch! Damn anesthesia.

  25. Congratulations! I think AndyZ looks just like his big brother. The pictures of the two of them together are so sweet. Can’t wait to see what NikkiZ thinks. I hope you feel better and get to eat soon!

  26. he is so beautiful. so so beautiful. grumpy face and all. I hope you are feeling much much better today!! I was so naseauted after a surgery I had, and the dry heaving after an eye surgery is NO fun…so I can just imagine what you went through yesterday!! had to have been 10 times worse.

  27. Congrats on a very good looking new son! I’m on dial-up and kept checking your blog all day for updates. Hope no one was trying to call me!!

FYI on the nausea after surgery-if you tell them you have that problem with anesthesia, there is a shot they can give you in your IV right before being put under. I had that problem when having surgeries, and the shots really helped!

  28. I, too, had the puking/dry heaves after my 2 c-sections. Soooo not fun. But, woohoo…BABY! Even if you think that’s not a flattering photo, he’s still beautiful and perfect. Which you already know. Congratulations!

  29. Congratulations!!! I Love all the old-man pictures of him on Flickr, and glad to see NikkiZ will see him today. I don’t really see the blond hair you twittered about yesterday, but I’ll trust you on that since you get to see the adorable baby in person!

  30. Congrats to the whole Zoot family. He’s absolutely beautiful! Makes me wish I had a newborn to hold again 🙂

  31. He is beautiful. Lil Z looks so proud. How fun to have such a happy and loving family.

  32. Congratulations! (I’m so jealous that you’re done being pregnant when my little guy seems to have set up camp for good.)

  33. Yeah! He’s here! Congratulations has been overused so just let me say “Awesome”! Enjoy that little guy! Can’t wait to hear what NikkiZ thinks of being a big sister.

  34. been keeping up with you lately and I just have to say beautiful baby….just precious. so happy for you. congradulations!

  35. and who says twelve years of catholic school taught me anything? Congratulations is what`I meant

  36. Congrats! The pics you already have up on Flickr made me cry. Sooo sweet.

Hope you are feeling better and eating soon!

  37. He is beautiful! You forget how little they are. Lil’bug was standing next to her activity table this morning which I brought up from the basement because I’m giving it to a coworker and I couldn’t believe how big she was next to it!

Keep him safe. I’ve been in tears all morning after hearing about a precious little life cut short. I’ve posted about it. I’m going to check out LilZ’s flickr, now. I need some good news.

I can’t wait to hear about NikkiZ’s first meeting with her baby ‘brudder’!

  38. Hee! He does kind of look like a grumpy old man! In an adorable way, of course.

Morphine? Really? I got Tylenol and Advil every 4 hours for a few days after my c-section, and that was it. Now I feel kind of short-changed. Maybe this round will be different since I’ll be at a different hospital.

  39. Congratulations! He is absolutely gorgeous. Makes me want another one and not all babies do that! 😉

Before my c-section, the anesthesiologist gave me something to help with nausea and for the first time I wasn’t puking after being put under. Not sure what it was called but I don’t think I will have another procedure without it.

  40. He is absolutely gorgeous! Congratulations! Zofran is awesome. Just watch out for the stop up side effect! 🙂

  41. What a beautiful boy!!! I didn’t read all the comments above, but I wanted to let you know I went through the same thing — the puking from the anesthesia and from the pain meds after a C-section — and it didn’t get better until I got solid food. Hope you’re feeling better today. And thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this wonderful event with us!

  42. Congratulations! He is so cute. I can’t wait to see more pictures!

  43. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WHOLE ZOOT FAMILY!!! He’s beautiful… great photos on LilZ’s flickr!!

I can’t believe i am going to have one of those (although I don’t know if it will be a boy or girl) in a month!!

  44. He is so beautiful! Congratulations! Take care of you! That was a lot of exclamation points, huh? It’s worth it.

  45. What a little cutie-pie! I love those funny grumpy expressions babies get. Congratulations, and I’m glad the nausea etc seem to be under control.

  46. I can’t believe I’m crying, but I AM. He’s gorgeous. I’m so happy for your little family. Congratulations to all of you. And I hope you get fed soon and the nausea goes away!

  47. Congratulations! He is so beautiful in every shape and form. You and Mr. Z did a wonderrful job!
Cant wait to see more pictures. Take care of yourself. I had 3 C-sections, and I know what that is like.

  48. Gotta love the Zofram or whatever its called. Add it to painkillers, hormones, and LIFE IS GOOD.

You can join me on the crazy train…at least you have a sweet baby to hold though…he is a doll.

  49. Yay! He is sooo adorable I just want to cuddle him! Congratulations. I hope you stop puking soon and are able to enjoy some food, since baby is enjoying his.

  50. What a little cutie patootie!! Hate to hear you’ve been feeling yucky because I know what that abdomen wound is all about. It hurts to sometimes breathe let alone try to dry heave!! I was blessed with gas after mine. Let’s just hope you don’t get any of that! Feeling that air bubble hurt like hell but I think the thunderous fart is what did me in….or maybe it was me laughing at myself for farting so loud. I’m immature!
Can’t wait to hear how NikkiZ reacts to her new little brother and to see more pictures of that little sweetheart!

  51. He is precious! Congratulations! Can’t wait to see more pictures! Hope your c-section recovery is going well!

  52. Congratulations! He is incredible. I’m sure you’ll feel better soon. Take care of yourself. Those huge wounds are bad enough without you over doing it! Love and Hugs to your whole family. You’re very blessed.

  53. Kim–he is absolutely gorgeous! Congratulations again. Can’t wait to hear what the siblings think of him!! Good luck with everything.

  54. Congratulations! He is absolutely gorgeous. Can’t wait to read more. Love him, little AndyZ!

  55. Yay! He’s here!

And a great picture of big brother LilZ holding AndyZ. What a terrific kid!

And guess what? We won’t even hold you to your promise of responding to all comments!

  56. He is beautiful in all his babyness! Congratulations and I hope you get to feeling good soon! We need more photos!! 🙂 Glad he is nursing well, what a blessing!

    Congrats again!!

    Beth B.

  57. Yay! He is beautiful! I can’t wait to hear more!

    Congratulations!

  58. He’s adorable – look at all that hair! Congratulations, and sleep now, while you can:-)

  59. Your new son is so beautiful. Enjoy this time goes by really fast!

Congratulations to the Zoot Family! And wishing you a very speedy recovery.

  60. ME TOO on the puking with abdominal wound! And it was one month ago exactly. Congratulations on AndyZ.

You know what else is AWESOME? Being diagnosed with 1.) inflammatory mastitis; 2.) thrush; and 3.) a blocked nipple pore all on THE SAME DAY! (Ow.)

  61. Your baby boy is beautiful! I remember the puking after delivery, it wasn’t any fun. Hope you feel better soon.

  62. Oh Zoot, he is just so cute. I hope you feel better soon so you can enjoy the snuggly-ness of that sweet boy even more! I’m glad things went well for you. 🙂

  63. Hooray! Happy Birthday to Andyz!!!
I hope you’re doing well and someone brought you some food. Have you had your steak dinner yet from HH?? Everybody always bitches about that but mine was pretty good. Maybe I ws just STARVING…

So AndyZ will always be super popular at school because he’ll have his birthday parties at the end of the school year. Party at the Zoot house…high school graduation should be fun!

Beautiful boy. Good job and congratulations!

  64. Yay! CONGRATS!!

After C-Section puking is the worst. I was lucky (haha) and not only did I gag, but my entire body itched for the following 24 hours. It was terrible while my belly was still numb, b/c I itched, but couldn’t feel me scratching!

  65. New photos!!Yea! Was getting concerned with no posts on the blog or twitter.

  66. He’s totally fab, wish I could smell him!! My favorite site and smell is New Baby. Yankee should make a candle…

  67. Oh, he’s so gorgeous! Great job, and I can’t wait to hear how NikkiZ reacts to her baby brother.

(And on the puking? I found eating a lot, but really slowly helped. Also counterpressure helped with the pain of puking, coughing, sneezing, laughing, getting up – just take a small firm pillow or you can use a rolled up towel secured with duct tape, and put that against your incision to brace it when you need to use those abdominal muscles. Makes a world of difference, and I’ve had 4 c-sections to attest to that. Hope the puking stops soon.)

    Congratulations all you Zoots!

  68. Zoot, thanks for sharing all of these amazing pictures with us. They’re just perfect. I especially love the ones of NikkiZ and LilZ with their new baby brother.

I’m so happy for your whole family!

  69. O!!M!!G!! He is so beautiful!

Also! C-sections make me barf, too! I am now an Old Pro, so I go in and I say to Fred (I’m on a first-name basis with the anesthesiologist), “Fred. Do not let me barf.” And he says, “I will not let you barf,” and he pats his jacket pocket where he has put several pre-loaded syringes of anti-barf. And then when I feel the first tinges of nausea, I say, “Debarfify me!” and he does. Last time, I did not even barf! Or gag! Except one little gag when I waited too long to tell him I was getting queasy. This is in sharp contrast to my first two c-sections, where I barfed all the way through the procedure and for hours and hours afterwards. Which makes for such pretty photos.

Oh yes! I am so sure you wanted to talk about my nausea experiences! What I mean to say is CONGRATULATIONS! And as you can plainly see with your own eyes, he is utterly beautiful.

  70. I just came across your site and have to say your little one is so precious. I, too, am from TN. I lived in Huntsville for about a year. Sorry they didn’t give you any good drugs when you needed them. Everyone is having babies these days…makes me sentimental. My 2 girls are 11 and 13. (no more for me b/c health reasons) I live vicariously through others’ pregnancies…LOL Your site is cool. As you can tell from my site addy, I am going through the same thing..heh

    Congrats!
    Chrissy

  71. He is gorgeous. Absolutely perfect. I’m so happy for you!

And I care about your nausea too 🙂

  72. Took me so long to get here – being in recovery from my own adventure – but better late than never: CONGRATULATIONS!!!

(And? I hoarded the pain meds, too. And the poo meds. All the meds. Have been terrified of running out. Because tylenol? Doesn’t help shredded nether regions.)
