Can I reward myself with a dozen donuts?

Wow. I’m running a 5K in a few hours. Can you believe it? How many times have I made fun of my brother for this “hobby” of his called “exercising.” How many times have I mentioned that I enjoy running about as much as I enjoy trips to the gynecologist. (read: NOT AT ALL.) Yet somehow, I started running three times a week at the Y. And somehow, I got myself up to running 4 miles at a time. FOUR DAMN MILES. That’s a long way. And somehow, I am registered to run a race today. How did all of this happen?

Baby steps. I just took baby steps. And I’m here, and I’m actually really proud of myself. I’m not one to harp on how awesome I am (I don’t want to make you jealous) – but I’m DAMN awesome. If you had told me a year ago (when I was 34 weeks pregnant – HA!) that I’d be running a 5K, I would have said, “Yeah – sure. Crackhead.”

(Watch me get out there, run half of a mile, and then have to walk the rest of the way because the shock in my system of running on the ground instead of a treadmill will keep me from completing the race. Hell, just running without watching TV at the same time may send my system into shock.)

Goals: I’m will run the entire 5K. No walking. I’m not going to worry about the fact that my 59-year old Dad (who is in town) will be finishing a day or two before I do. I will not try to intentionally trip small children who pass me on the route. I will not think about the time of my run. I will only think about rewarding myself with a Pumpkin Cream Cheese bagel from Bruegger’s.

Go me.

  1. You can do it! Trust me… as someone who has run a few 5Ks, but is by no means an actual runner, it is much easier than you think once you get out there. You sort of get swept up in the whole experience of running with all of these people and whenever you think of stopping, you just hear the crowd or see someone clearly much older or out of shape than you still chugging along, and you know you can do it. You just have to be careful that in the excitement of it all you don’t start out too fast. Just hang out towards the back of the crowd at the start and stay as close to your regular pace as much as possible. Good luck!! And enjoy your bagel!!

    Don’t worry, you’ll probably find that running on the road is actually EASIER than running on a treadmill. At least, I think it is.

  3. Wow, I’m impressed. I don’t think I have the discipline to train like that.

    Hope it goes well, I’m sure it will. You will probably surprise yourself.

    And I don’t see anything wrong with a dozen donuts hehe.

  4. woohoo! go zoot! i’ve always wanted to run a 5k, too, but i can never stick to a running schedule to train for it. i really don’t have any endurance. also, i just don’t like running.

    I ran a 5k and a 10k last year, but somehow, after the goals were accomplished, i slowly stopped running… now i’m back where i started. And 5kg heavier *sighs*

    I will try to find that schedule and start again!

  13. I have checked in all day for the results… How many donuts did you eat after the 5k? Was it totally worth it and you are ready to do another??? Details please… I can’t keep stalking this site, your detector will buzz and say geesh this girl has been here way too many times today!

  14. Wow!!! Go you! I’m getting all into the treadmill thing but just walking, walking fast, adding a bit of a grade, but still just walking. I’m too skeered to run. LOL Good luck on your run!!

  15. So it’s Sunday evening, and I’ve been checking back since yesterday morning to see how the race went.

    My only hope is that you aren’t still running.
