My Reproductive Nightmare, Pregnant

A Special Kind of Pesimism

We ordered a doppler yesterday (for those non-psycho pregnant, a doppler is the device you can hear the baby’s heartbeat with by rubbing it on the tummy). It’s a monthly rental deal, and we send it back when we’re done. Typically? We should be able to pick up the heartbeat with it at 10weeks. I am officially 9w2d today. The doppler will be here sometime early next week, I guess. This is the BIG question. It will actually be here BEFORE I’m at 10w. So, do I use it when I’m 10w0d and tempt fate and my sanity? Or do I push my patience (and sanity, it’s actually part of BOTH sides of this equation) and wait a few days until I’m more “guaranteed” to get a heartbeat? The range is actually 10w-12w when you can first hear it, so we could concievably NOT hear it until 12w, and everything could still be fine, but we ALL know that’s NOT how MY brain works. If I don’t hear it by week 11? I’m going to assume the fetus is dead and go back to my crack habit.

Kidding. Kinda.

So – what do you think? Try it at 10w and become an even BIGGER basket case if I don’t hear anything? Or wait several days, becoming an even BIGGER basket case as the days pass? Do you see how that works? How both options have the same downsides?

Welcome to my brain. You can stay as long as you want, but don’t touch anything, it’s all so very fragile.

  1. My brain works in much the same way on these things. Since I’ve also had 3 miscarriages, I know that fear too well. My only experience with the doppler has been bad, in the OBs office and he “wasn’t concerned because 10 weeks is just an average.”

For me, I’m not sure I would rent one in the future, however if I already have one there…. Either way you’re going to be a basketcase. And I personally am an instant gratification girl. If it’s there, I have to use it NOW, no waiting (could be why I don’t stock up on HPTs–I’d be peeing starting on cd1 hehe). I say, use it as soon as you get it, then use it every day there after at least twice a day until you are at 11 wks (if you hear nothing) when you call the doctor ranting and make them see you so they can show you the right way to do it. Of course, if you do hear it…then do it about 10 times a day. Make recordings. Re-record your voicemail message to say Mr. Zoot, Miss Zoot, Lil Zoot and Baby Zoot (swishswishswish) can’t come to the phone…” πŸ˜‰

  2. i say give it to a close friend & have them keep it until week 11. that way you have better chance to hear it when you use it & you won’t be tempted to use it too early.

  3. Well, I figure you’ll do what you want…. but I know I’d be using it right away. Of course if I used it at 10 weeks, I’d never hear a thing. I had too much flab to get through; we never heard anything until 14-15 weeks with the others. It was easier to see on the ultrasound.

Love the idea for a voicemail message!

  4. I’d be surprised if you didn’t use it the day it arrived and second Mike’s idea!

I love the idea for the voicemail message, too πŸ™‚

  5. And there’s the other side…what if you try it immediately and hear Tiny Zoots heartbeat straight off? Then you can do happy dances and be an insanely happy type basketcase πŸ™‚

  6. Yup…do it on the animals. If nothing else it’s entertaining. Buy a hamster…try it on it.
I could never wait and I would drive myself insane trying it every single day.
    Good luck with that.

  7. Attempt to use it immediately……as long as you have a dozen Krispy Kremes and cases of Wheat Thins on the other side of you. Then if it takes longer to hear than you’d like…you’ll have something to take your mind off it…temporarily.

  8. If you get it in the mail, you know you are going to use it. The big issue is going to be, as you noted, is it too soon. I had a *rough* experience with our first heart beat detection.

The doctor had trouble finding it, and I just about lost it. Do you know any doctors who would be willing to come to your house to use the equipment for you so that at least you have that peace of mind?

  9. I would say wait, because my doctor couldn’t find our baby’s heart beat at 10 weeks using the one he had. I freaked out of course…on the good side though, he sent me for an ultrasound and I got to see the little cutie doing flips and zooming around in there! However, I know I would have a hard time waiting with the doppler right there in the house within reach. πŸ™‚

  10. I would call the company and ask them to delay shipment. There’s no way you’ll be able to have that kind of self control! I sure wouldn’t.

  11. Honestly? It’s REALLY hard to use…we had a home one we borrowed and even at 8 months I couldn’t find the baby’s heartbeat very easily. I’d find MY heartbeat, my stomach growling, but only for a split second would I find the baby’s heartbeat. So if you use it, don’t be too disappointed if you can’t find the heartbeat, those things are a bitch LOL.

  12. I have some bad news…if you ordered it from, you’re going to get that doppler THIS WEEK. It practically arrives the day after you order it. Damn their efficiency!

I say use it whenever you want. The first few times you use it suck anyway, because you have no idea where to look or how to best move the microphone around. (Hint: Start super-low, like pubic-bone low, and don’t drag the mic…kind of twist and turn it verrrry slowly.) So the longer you wait, the more hysterical you are that you “should” hear it and the more frustrated you are that you can’t find it.

Translation: you’re screwed either way, eat ice cream instead.

  13. I like Mike’s idea, though Amalah has a good point. You’ll have to try it out several times before you hear anything because it’s a tiny heartbeat and not an easy thing to find. Heed her advice and stock up on ice cream just in case. πŸ˜‰

  14. Voice mail, check. Give to a friend, check. Eat ice cream, check. All wonderful ideas πŸ™‚

  15. Hey you shoudl talk to Chris at he just had photos posted oh him and his wife trying it on their cat. I am an impatient freak and would try it 100 times a day starting as soon as I got it out of the package. I like the thought someone had of waiting until week 11. That will also put you almost at your next doctor appt. too right?

  16. Congrats! I’ve had problems with my pc and my blog reading. I did not know you were expecting, I think it wonderful!
    When are you due?

  17. ya know, my sister didn’t hear a heartbeat on her last one til she was 22 weeks, the baby was in the back and her uterus was prolapsed from the weight of the little tike. Scared the crap out of her so they did an ultrasound and all the parts were working.

Don’t stress yet. Save it for when the kid is 3 and making you crazy.
