Books Make Me Happy

Pretty Please?

Stace’s eldest daughter, Hermione (YES! I finally thought of a good name for her that she’ll LIKE) (update from 2020 – I have NO recollection of calling her that. Her name is Lauren, I’m noting that because I have not recollection of calling her Hermione on this blog) recommended the book, Because of Winn Dixie to LilZoot and I to read. It turns out there is a movie adaptation for the book coming out some time this year. IMDB swears that Dave Matthews (the musician) is playing one of the main characters. If this is true? I’m going to be ALL OVER this movie when it comes out…

What was my point?

Oh yeah, the book. LilZoot finished it on Monday and INSISTED that I read it as soon as possible. It’s a relatively short book so I knew it would only take a day for me to read. I started it yesterday on my lunch break and got halfway through it. I called LilZ on my way home from work to say, “When I get home, I’m sitting in the car and finishing this damn book. Do NOT interrupt me until it is done and if it ends badly? You and Hermione are going to PAY big time for making me read it.” Luckily – it ended just as beautifully as it began.

I don’t ask for much of you guys. I know we all have different tastes and just because I love it doesn’t mean you will (it just means you SHOULD). However – you MUST. READ. THIS. BOOK….NOW! Seriously. Go buy it. If your children can’t read yet? Read it to them, it’s very short. If your children can read? You still need to read it too. And if you have no children? Who cares! Go read it anyway! It’s a wonderful story about a dog. And it looks like Dave Matthews is going to be in the movie version (although – from the cast list alone at IMDB, its obvious there is going to be a big difference between the book and the movie)! And it’s just beautiful. Truly. Do you need any more convincing? Well, I also need someone to talk about it with…So do it for me!

  1. You and I have the same taste as far as children’s literature and movies go, so I’ll definitely take your word on this and pick up a copy! 🙂 Thanks.

  2. OMG. I saw the preview for this movie yesterday (which does have Dave Mathews, by the by) and thought to myself, I have to go and read this book, because i am sure I will love it. How freaky?

  3. OMG, please tell me that nothing bad happens to the dog because I will burst into tears. I cant take watching or reading ANYTHING with sad stories about pets!!! I dont even like watching cowboy and indian movies because the horses fall down!
I think I need serious help!

  4. I read DiCamilo’s “Tiger Rising” to my son last year, and it was probably the first book to really make him think. It was an interesting story, but I’ve never read “Winn Dixie”. Maybe I’ll give it a try.

It’s not, like, about a supermarket is it? 🙂

  5. Yeah, that’s funny. I just saw a preview for the movie the other day. It looks super cute. Hmm,… can’t remember where I saw the preview…. now I’m gonna be obsessing about that for the rest of the day. Thanks Zoot. hahahaha….j/k

  6. It will be at a theatre near you Feb. 18. Yes, it does have dave matthews and some pretty well know actors as well.

  7. I read it a long time ago and now I can’t remember what it is about. Guess I will have to read it again. (Once upon a time I worked in a children’s bookstore, it was great, I read all the kid books.)

  8. I saw the previews for this movie a month or so ago, and I was like, “Hey! It’s Dave Matthews!”

I don’t know how widespread Winn Dixies are. Does everyone in the southern US have them? Because we have them on every corner here in Florida, but I’d never heard of them until we moved here (from PA).

  9. Yeah I saw the trailer with you and it said Dave Mattews plays Otis. The movie looks greeeeeaat and I know the book is goooooooood!

  10. My daughter bought the book at the last book fair, and it is on her pile of books to read (yeah, she has one too!), I’ll have to check it out!

  11. Dude, I’ll so read that, and you need to read anything by Connie Mae Fowler, if you haven’t already…she just had a new book come out, too!

  12. I picked up the book from the library yesterday, read most of it when I got home, finished it off this morning.
I thought it was a simple, good feeling story. The girl in it reminded me of Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird, there are a couple of similarities between the two books. Not sure how good the movie would be, not a lot happens…

  13. The Tale of Despereaux, Kate DiCamillo’s next book, is a delight as well. I keep it on my the shelves near my desk as inspiration. Children’s lit isn’t just for kids.

  14. OMG! You are kidding me! I just got this book last week and started on it — after seeing the trailer for the movie. Great minds think alike, I guess. I am not even halfway through yet because I have four other books going right now but I am liking it so far. Although I did look ahead to make sure the dog doesn’t die. I don’t read animal books where the animal snuffs it in the end. That’s a big no-no.

  15. That is a great book! And someone above mentioned The Tale of Despereaux, also by her– I love love loved it too, and we aren’t the only ones: it won the Newbery Award (the U.S. kid-lit version of the Oscars/Pulitzers/Nobel/Booker) last year.

    *sigh* I love kids’ books.
