My Son. The Heartbreaker.

This is a letter that LilZ brought home today. I erased the names to protect the innocent. Here is the problem: This is NOT from SuzyQ, the girl he has a crush on. This is from a girl who is a friend of his. She invited him to her party last weekend and he went, of course. She started showing signs of having a crush on him, and I told him to be careful. So – when he showed me this? I said, “Oh No.”

And he said?

“I dont WANT to break her heart!”

(hehe)

He’s having a hard time figuring out how to tell her he doesnt want to be her boyfriend. He feels so bad he almost talked himself into being her boyfriend just so he wouldnt have to tell her “No”! He’s so pitiful. He said she wore his jacket all day today. He’s called her twice, but can’t bring himself to tell her, so he’s making it WORSE.

Got any advice for my son, the heartbreaker?

(And how ADORABLE is all this? EEEK…)

  1. good lord that’s cute…when did all this start happening in grade school???….but he should just muster up and tell her (kindly) that he not intrasted in the girl….might as well get into the habit now

  2. That song during the Wedding Singer comes to mind – Love Hurts.
I think I’ll do home schooling from now on.

  3. Maybe say that he thinks she’s really, really cool, but that his mom tells him he’s too young to have girlfriends right now (because he still has Mom to be the priority, but we won’t go there), but he still wants to be friends.

    Cos, come on, he’s NINE! He’s a baby, age-wise…

I don’t WANT lilZ to grow up!

  4. How about “I’m too young to have a girlfriend but I sure would like to be your friend.”

Is that too hokey? It’s all true, even though he wants to be SuzyQ’s boyfriend. When and if Suzy comes to her senses and recognizes LilZ’s magnificence, you can cross that bridge then.

  5. Yeah, what elektra said! My parents always said if we were in a situation where we were unsure, all we had to say was that our parents said no or “Man, if my mom found out that I was going to do something like that, she would KILL me!” If worked great every time.

  6. This is adorable, but it’s also a big deal to the kids. It seems like he has to learn how to say things others don’t want to hear. Everyone has to learn sometime. It’s probably a good idea to encorage him to affirm her somehow (not sure how the grade school set does that now. “I think you are totally nce, but …”? “You’re fun to hang out with, and I’m awfully sorry, but … “?), but still to tell her. If he doesn’t, you and I know it’ll get harder and it’ll get worse. Maybe a nice note that he could read to her?

I was never in the popular crowd that did this. I was too traumatized from being skipped a grade.

  7. i agree… it’s all your fault! tell him that you don’t think it’s a good idea to get involved with girls right now.

it’s easy for you to take that fall!

  8. How cute is he? and polite too, what a great kid! (Why is the song “Don’t go Breaking My heart” going through my head?)

  9. Omg… what a sweetie you have. I’m just so touched that he doesn’t want to break her heart. You are obviously doing a WONDERFUL job raising him!!!

I think he should tell her that he likes her friend. Then she will tell her friend and maybe the friend will come back to him and tell him she likes him…. and that gets him out of the messy business of the girl he really likes not wanting to like him cause it would hurt the note girl.

    Geeze that was corn-fusing.

  10. What a sweetheart! But I agree with whomever said this would be a good learning experience for him. It’s definitely a skill he needs to have. I have never quite learned how to put my foot down and be 100% honest when giving bad news like that. I tend to want to just ignore it and hope it goes away. So the earlier he can cultivate the skill, the better. Good luck to him!

  11. I can’t, and yet I totally can, believe that LilZ is juggling already. I third, or fourth, or whatever the motion to let her down gently and blame mom 😀

  12. Aww your lil man is such the hearthrob (AT 9!). *sigh* as someone else posted “love hurts” but it shouldn’t at 9. Hopefully LilZ finds a way to let this girl down easily – not letting her wear his jacket all day might be a way to start! I hope he gets a letter like this from Susie Q. soon – or maybe he should send on to her….;)

  13. Holy crap! Reading this makes me realize that I’m not prepared for kids at all. Now what do I do with three boys?!

How old are these kids anyway!?
