Whirlwind.

So, E has spent the last few months looking over various cities for his first job post-graduation. He worked as a production assistance on the show Project Runway in NYC for awhile, but the pay was not sustainable and he just decided he could not commit to living in New York without a little more. He’s been doing a little bit of freelance and waiting tables in Georgia in the meantime and then – out of the blue – a communications job opened up at one of the gems of Huntsville: Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment. It is the “largest privately owned arts facility in the United States. With a focus on visual arts, this huge historic factory building has been redeveloped into 148 working studios for over 200 artists and makers, 6 fine art galleries, a multi-use theatre, and performance venues.” We’ve been going there for years and it has always been one of E’s favorite places and he’s had friends with gallery openings and we’ve gone to events there and it’s a big part of his creative upbringing.

And he starts work as there on Wednesday.

He got the job offer on Thursday and it’s been a whirlwind since then. We had to celebrate, of course, and then he had to find an apartment (our new house is small and contains two children that refuse to leave him alone when he’s here for more than 5 minutes at a time) that he could move into on SUNDAY which was quite a challenge. He turned in an application on Friday and rushed back to Georgia where he packed everything up in hopes the application would be accepted in time for a Sunday move in. He got word on Saturday, so he detoured through Montevallo to pick up his cat (who has her own instagram) who a friend had been caring for and then hit the road with a cat and his possession back to Huntsville on Sunday.

We met him with a car full of his stuff at his apartment yesterday afternoon. Because he didn’t want to be “tied” to anything that would keep him from accepting a job, his life really had condensed down to two car loads. Which is great for a move, but shitty for living. So, we hit the town and spent several hours shopping for things like silverware holders and bedding and candles. Then we hugged him goodbye last night so he could have his long-time BFF (seriously, we have pics of them together in diapers) come over for pizza he would be cooking on his brand new cooking sheet!

It’s been a crazy few days for us, I can only imagine how weird it has been for him. He never dreamed he’d end up back in Huntsville but how can you pass up working at the place that inspired you growing up? Seriously. Us saying that he works there in Huntsville is the fastest way to get cool points. And we are soaking it up. (My husband works for a video-game adjacent company and I find in certain crowds that gets me similar cool points.)

He’s got his first job with a salary and his first apartment and his first toaster and I just am overwhelmed by the good fortune of all of that actually happening HERE, in the town that I LIVE IN.

He’s home again.

That’s so awesome! Congratulations to E! and to the rest of the family. I bet that’s going to do your heart good, having him close AND working at an awesome job.

  2. I am SO HAPPY for you! (Okay, and for E too…but also for YOU.) The other day I was catching up on your blog posts and wondered if he was in NYC, and I thought about how that must be a bit hard on your heart (even though it would obviously be awesome for other reasons). I’m so excited for you that he’s now in your TOWN!

  5. So happy for you and for him and the rest of the family to have him so close and have a dream job like that. Very awesome…but Project Runway!! OMG! That’s an experience I’m sure he won’t forget very soon either.
Anyway. Congrats to all. Here’s hoping it’s everything he’s been looking for.
