The Most Requested E Update

My last visit to Montevallo!
My last visit to Montevallo!
So many of you asked how E is doing at college and he’s doing GREAT. Montevallo is a small liberal arts college about 2.5 hours from here and he’s really enjoying it. If you follow him on Instagram or Twitter you’re seeing constant references to PV and Purple Side and sometimes Cows.

Let me explain.

Montevallo doesn’t have a football team. However, they have a long-standing homecoming type event called College Night where campus divides into Purple Side and Gold Side. The two sides put on a big musical production and compete in front of a panel of judges. There are tons of events for each group leading up to the main event of College Night and you basically choose your side your freshmen year and stick with it the entire term.

Now, E has chosen purple (PV!) and the purple mascot is a cow. He was “adopted” by an older student and he calls him his “purple dad”. In the same vein he has a purple sister and a purple grandma. It’s all very spirited and has added such a fun element to his experience. College Night is in February and he plans on auditioning for the show. He’s also serving as some sort of assistant or representative or something on the Purple counsel. Basically? He’s having a ball, and making tons of friends.

The bummer is his car died so he’s been stranded at school. He’s hitched a ride home once and I’ve visited twice, but he’s experiencing extreme frustration over not having a car. But he doesn’t get a whole lot of sympathy from me since I didn’t have a car my freshman year either. And his school is WAY more accommodating (small with plenty of stuff within walking distance) than mine was. He also has NO spending money because it’s expensive enough to pay for college, we’re not floating him cash like I’m sure he’d love. He’s working on getting a job, but it’s a bit difficult when you don’t have a car.

He’s really having the college experience I hoped he’d have. He’s meeting tons of different people and having tons of different experiences. To me, that first year of college is more about those things than the academia since you spend it taking core classes. I mainly keep up with him through Twitter and Instagram because I don’t want to call him too much. We also email and text a bit. I wish I could talk to him every day, but I’m trying to be a big girl and let him call me when he has stories to tell.

He won’t be home at Thanksgiving as he’ll be visiting his Dad so I’m trying not to get too bummed about that. But I’m hoping to pop down and see him before then.

All in all? He’s doing great. He seems happy – most of the time – and I think he’s building strong relationships to get him through the next several years. I can’t wait to experience his first College Night – our whole family is now enthusiastically Purple in his honor.

I couldn’t have written a better script for his first year if I had wanted to.
