The Good and The Bad.

I went to an event last night at UAH where Yaa Gyasi (I wrote about her book here.) read a chapter from her book. She told us the character’s chapter using the name of the character but I couldn’t remember exactly which character it was. Then she read the first line and I remembered, it was a female slave’s character with a tragic story (I doubt there are any slave stories absent of tragedy) and I just watched her read these words and they were even stronger than they were when I read them off the page myself.

She did a book signing afterwards and took time for pictures but I didn’t have anyone with me so I did a selfie…OF COURSE I DID. She was very kind. She’s from Huntsville so her parents were there and they were adorably proud of her and it was just a lovely evening.

Of course then I came back home to Bambi who is suffering from cognitive degeneration associated with aging. They got hime calm at the vet with a bubbler in a water bowl and they were finally able to get him to eat some so they let us borrow the bubbler and bring him home. I hoped we could get him “stable” enough to have a good weekend with E as he’s coming up to stay with the kids this weekend. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be working. Part of why/how they got him calm may have been he was in a cage there…and here he can just wander around aimlessly. I don’t want to keep him locked up just to keep him calm…just to keep him alive. Also, keeping him alive just so E can see him…and then have to spend the weekend dealing with his decline…seems extremely cruel.

So I’m going to call the vet back this morning and say, “I think it’s time.”

Oh, I’m so sorry you’re going to have to say good-bye to Bambi. I’m glad you were able to give you cat such a good home for so long.

I’m so sorry, Kim. We are nearing this point with our dogs (a 13yo wire fox terrier and 9yo Great Dane). I have such mixed feelings about it all. Prayers for peace and comfort for you all.

I’m so sorry about Bambi. I’ve been there before with my cats, and with 3 now I will be there again one day. It is never easy. I hope it helps to know he knows he is loved tremendously.
About your book…. I may have to give it a try! I have not met her, at least directly, but her brother played soccer with my Christopher years ago. I remember them as very nice family.

I’m so sorry to hear about Bambi. We had to put my father’s cat down last year (my father lives alone, so Smokey was his only company). We tried everything we could to help him, but in the end his tumor metastasized and it wasn’t right to let him suffer. My vet friend called it “the last kind thing you could do”. I hope that brings you some comfort – it helped me.

I’m sorry about Bambi. I know you’ll be giving him extra cuddles anyway, but give him one for me, would you? It’ll make you both feel a bit better. And take lots of pictures of him!

I’m so sorry. I fear having to make this decision for my 17 year old cat, Mandy. I’ll be thinking of you 🙁

So sorry you are having to make this decision with Bambi. I did the same for my 14 yr old cat, Minnie, in 2009. She had kidney disease for years and she went into kidney failure.
I know how extremely difficult and painful this is. Prayers are with you today.

I’m so sorry about Bambi. We had to do the same this spring with my 17 year old cat – she was my first pet ever on my own. We thought we were going to have to do the same this week for our 16 year old cat, but he needed a boost to his thyroid meds & he’s doing better now. I hope Bambi has a peaceful ending to his life.

Giant hugs to you about your beautiful, sweet kitty. I have had my Murphy for 8 years. He is for sure my best friend and I have to admit to loving him as much as I do my children. I know I can only imagine how sad you feel. I do support your decision, though. Sounds like it is time, and it would be hard on all three kids if he passed while you are gone this weekend. 🙁
