The Cookies That Can Not Be Named

My husband was craving cookies one night. He looked up a recipe online for chocolate-chip cookies and modified it to fit what we had in the cupboard. Basically – he just added some white-chocolate chips where we didn’t have enough milk-chocolate chips. What resulted was BRILLIANCE.

Here is the key: No one in my home had ever made homemade cookies before. Anyone who has? Will not be impressed by this recipe. HOWEVER, since I know we are not the only people out there who have never made cookies from scratch, I am putting the recipe (with his adjustment) here so that others can try it. Turns out? HOMEMADE COOKIES ARE GOOD! And not scary at all! I’m glad he tried them because I don’t think I ever would have.

My husband, now our in-home cookie expert, says that the most important part of the instructions were…the actual instructions. Not the ingredients. He swears that it was HOW he mixed the stuff that made the cookies brilliant, not WHAT he put in them. I will not argue with him. I just know I handed them out all last weekend exclaiming: THESE ARE MY FAVORITE COOKIES IN THE WORLD. Unfortunately, I don’t know what to name them to indicate the presences of milk chocolate chips AND white chocolate chips without getting into some sort of excess-chip situation. White Chocolate and Chocolate Chip Cookies is too much of a tongue-twister. For now? The Cookies That Can Not Be Named.

No Name Cookies


* 2 1/4 cups flour
* 1 tsp baking soda
* 1 tsp salt
* 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
* 3/4 cup granulated sugar
* 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 2 large eggs
* 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
* 1 cup white chocolate chips


PREHEAT oven to 375° F.

COMBINE flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl.

In a larger bowl, mix softened butter, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Gradually mix in flour mixture. (We did all of this mixing by hand, no need to dirty up your mixer!)

Stir in all chips. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto baking sheets. (I greased my, Donnie didn’t. Both turned out fine.)

BAKE for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

    He is right. It took me a while to realize that you don’t just dump it all in a bowl and stir. You mix all the dry stuff together and all the wet stuff together and then you slowly add the dry to the wet. Preferably with a stand mixer. And then you eat the cookie dough off the attachment piece.

    Also, chilling the dough before putting on the cookie sheet helps.

      I still haven’t bought a stand-mixer yet, which is why I mentioned it in the directions. I used to just avoid recipes that use them, assuming I couldn’t do it right. But Donnie wanted cookies so he ignored that and just stirred and they turned out fine!

      I’m not sure if it’s just me being stubborn now or what…but I find some sort of resistance in my brain against stand mixers. Heh.

    Haha Voldecookies sounds pretty great 😉 Or if you wanted to be all boring and lame, you could call them something like double chocolatey chip deliciousness hehe.

    omg, I love chocolate chip cookies and white chocolate chip cookies, and I make a ton of cookies, but I never thought to combine the two. Your husband is super smart!

    Sweet Sister!! I made these for Thanksgiving… oh so good! It must be the special way you mix the ingredients, cause oh man, they are absolutely delicious! In fact, I hope you don’t mind but I am going to submit this recipe to my church cookbook that is being made this year. I am going to call them “Kim’s Modified Chocolate Chip Cookies!” I know Donnie was really the owner of the modification..but eh, you’re getting the credit! Lots of hugs!
