Half Marathons, Pop Up Parks, Leaves…OH MY!

The race yesterday went GREAT. My 13.1 PR is a 2:07 but I’ve never tried to pace anyone faster than a 2:20 since that day. I was looking at my 10K time from a race in May and thought You know, I think I’m still capable of going faster, even though I don’t do regular speedwork. See? After 2+ years I still don’t have a great handle of what my natural “best” pace is at longer distances. Mainly because I’m always so focused on just completing that I never want to push myself too hard so that I bonk or fade too soon.

So! I decided to offer to pace at a 10-minute mile yesterday to the group I’ve been helping with. (My 2:07 PR is a 9:40 pace.) And y’all? I brought the one girl I ended up pacing to a 2:10 finish. THAT IS EXACTLY A 10-minute pace! I was SUPER-proud and I felt really good. I don’t think I could have carried a 10-minute pace for much further, but I think I could have done that race anywhere from a 9:30-10:00 pace fine. It felt great. I think next year I’ll need to start re-analyzing my marathon pace. Right now my marathon PR is about an 11:30 pace and that seems REALLY far off from my 10:00 half-marathon pace. I should probably work to get those a bit closer together.

Then we went downtown to check out our Pop Up Park competition. Basically, businesses sponsored tiny little parks around our square downtown. Some were more of the “play” kind of park with checkers and twister and sandpits, some were more the “sit and relax” kind of park with benches and tables and gardens. But all in all? SO COOL. I’m telling you, Huntsville surprises me quite often with being such a cool city. I have my complaints but man, there are a lot of cool people in charge around here so we do often get cool things popping up. We also have a new Arts and Entertainment district that is open Thursdays and Fridays (I think) but I’m old and haven’t checked that out yet.

On our way back to our car we saw a professional photographer taking some pictures of some cute kid in the leaves and I thought, Man…I wish I had my real camera with me. I just don’t carry it around as much anymore because my phone is sufficient for 90% of the picture taking I do. But, I thought, You know what? I can still document some fun. This camera is still great. So, we set up some fake Playing In The Leaves shots and were cracking ourselves up with all of the failed attempts.

And sometimes the phone does JUST FINE.

P.S. I’d like to point out that I’ve successfully remembered to blog TWO weekends in a row! Yay for me and potential NaBloPoMo success! I always get screwed on Thanksgiving though because that’s like a 4-day weekend. Fingers crossed!

Congratulations on the great race! I don’t run so I don’t really understand all that, but I do get trying to do better and it sounds like you did that. So way to go! And is ‘bonk’ an official race term?

That photo of the kids is awesome. Love the attempts at leaf action shots; too cute.

Congrats on blogging two weekends in a row, too. Just wanted to let you know that we are reading these weekend posts, so keep up the good work!
