This year, as a way of coping with my depression and anxiety, I rediscovered my love of reading. I’ve always been an avid reader but it’s fallen to the wayside in the last few years as most of my spare time would go to A) Running and B) Things related to trying to downsize. But this year I’ve not run as much and we finally finished OPERATION DOWNSIZE so I’ve had more time and HOLY CRAP, why did I ever stop? I had a really good stretch of luck, too. I tend to go back and forth between buying books (something I do if I’m confident I’ll want it on my shelf) and checking them out at the library so I tried to use my Amazon purchase history and my Library history to put together my 2017 list of Books I’ve Read. I don’t think this is 100% complete as I have no way of looking up books I bought at Barnes & Noble which I do periodically. If I buy a book and don’t either A) Want to read it again or B) Want to be able to lend it out then I donate it as soon as I’m done. Those books may be lost to the ether! But – as best as I can do – here is a list of books I’ve finished in 2017. (There are a few in progress still but they’ll go in the 2018 list when I finish them.)
The girl who fell from the sky : a novel / Durrow, Heidi W.
Rules of civility / Towles, Amor
Little Fires Everywhere / Ng, Celeste
I’ll give you the sun / Nelson, Jandy
Middlesex / Eugenides, Jeffrey
The Girl Who Drank the Moon / Kelly Barnhill
Akata Witch /Okorafor, Nnedi
Akata Warrior / Okorafor, Nnedi
We Are Okay / LaCour, Nina
Hunger / Gay, Roxanne
The Raven King / Stiefvater, Maggie
The dream thieves / Stiefvater, Maggie
The Raven Boys / Stiefvater, Maggie
Blue lily, lily Blue / Stiefvater, Maggie
Refugee / Alan Gratz
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe / Saenz, Benjamin Alire
Piecing Me Together/ Watson, Renée
Turtles All the Way Down / Green, John
The Inexplicable Logic Of My life / Saenz, Benjamin Alire
Maggie Stiefvater / All the Crooked Saints
The Circle / Eggers, Dave
The Hate U Give / Thomas, Angie
Small Great Things / Jodi Picoult
The First Rule of Punk / Celia C Pérez
Walk Two Moons / Sharon Creech
And these are the new additions to my bookshelf meaning they were REALLY good. (Note: The Hate U Give is not in the picture because it’s in the hands of a friend.) I can’t choose a favorite but know that I would recommend all of these books HIGHLY.
The thing I’m the most proud of is that this list is not dominated by white writers OR white characters. As a matter of fact, if you remove the fact that the SAME white woman wrote FIVE of the books I read in 2017 and instead just look at the list of authors – white authors were very much the minority for me this year. That was very deliberate as I tried to branch out and be cognizant of supporting writers of color – and especially reading more outside my own realm of experience. I hope to continue the trend again this year.
OH! That reminds me! Donnie and Eliah got together and gave me a subscription to Parnassus Next for 2018! Every month I will get an autographed YA book sent to my door! I can’t wait!
I look forward to continuing this trend of reading as I have lately been doing that in the mornings instead of surfing social media. I find reading a much better way to start the day.
