Be A Voter.
Please. Please. Please be a voter in this midterm election.
Maybe you support our current President in everything he’s doing. (If you do? Then you make an odd choice to read this blog. EDIT TO CLARIFY: I do not think people with differing politics shouldn’t read this blog. That’s not what I meant. I just meant if you support our President I would think my lack of support would bother you enough not to read.) But if you don’t, then you voting in this midterm election is something that is critical, maybe even life or death, for a lot of people in this country. These lower-level elections – everything from city council to Governor to Senate – are the only chance we have to help the already underserved and underrepresented people in our country.
There are broken families who dared try to seek asylum in our country who are not even allowed to be reunited with their children, much less vote for people who could help make that happen.
There are trans men and women who just want to serve in our military with honor and pride.
There are black mothers terrified of raising sons in this age of mass incarceration supported by systemic racism.
There are police departments tasked with handling people in mental health crisis because our mental healthcare system has been crumbling without support at a time when suicide rates are rising at an alarming rate.
There are high school students who desperately want a college degree but are terrified of sky-rocketing tuition rates and accumulating massive piles of debt upon receiving that degree. Not reaching for their college dreams could limit them to the economic strata of their parents, solidifying a country where children will be bound by their birth rite.
There are women who live in states that if Roe V Wade was overturned, state laws would not allow them to make decisions about pregnancies that were conceived by rape, or that jeopardize their own health.
There are minorities and poor people who are more negatively impacted by things like Voting Roll Purges and ID requirements and no Early Voting and they may not be ABLE to vote.
There are minorities of race and culture and religion and gender and sexuality that have been oppressed by the power of a white male Christian supremacy and they are being represented by people who refuse to acknowledge any data that proves that imbalance of power exists. How can an unjust power system be brought down if those who support it refuse to acknowledge it exists?
There are students who will be starting school in the Fall and wondering if this will be the year THEIR school makes the news after an attack from another crazed gunman.
There are journalists tired of being demonized and threatened for daring to negatively cover this administration.
All of these people and many, many more are counting on you to be inconvenienced for ONE DAY and to vote to help them. We’ve seen in in dozens of elections in the last two years, EVERY VOTE COUNTS. We need to show up en masse to say LOUDLY and PROUDLY that we DO NOT SUPPORT THIS ADMINISTRATION.
BE A VOTER IN THIS MIDTERM ELECTION.
