I'm addicted to superhero movies, donuts, craft beer, playing in the woods, and reading YA fiction. I'm a writer by day and a dreamer by night.

Back to where it all started…

Before I started blogging at this incarnation of my blog in 2004, I set up a geocities page where I talked about TV. Mainly a show called Temptation Island. No one knew about it and I lost interest in it pretty quickly, but it was my attempt to join the Television Without Pity circle (If you were obsessed with TV in the late 90s/ early 2000s you knew MightyBigTV and TWoP) and it didn’t last long.

You see, I didn’t grow up with regular TV watching habits. We had pretty strict TV rules that I broke whenever my Dad was gone, but that wasn’t often. I also didn’t have cable often in college so I have these weird blanks of pop culture knowledge. I didn’t watch anything by Josh Whedon until 2008 when I binge-watched it ALL on maternity leave with Wesley. I still haven’t seen an episode of Dawson’s Creek or Freaks and Geeks and I didn’t start watching Veronica Mars until the last season.

When I got cable regularly sometime in 2000 or 2001, I was obsessed with reality TV. I watch Amazing Race, Big Brother, Survivor and of course American Idol. I started slowly but surely losing interest in those shows and becoming more of a scripted television fan and now the only reality TV I watch is So You Think You Can Dance and I didn’t watch that last season.

I still have never gotten into grown-up shows. I watched a little bit of Weeds but hated the lead female too much to stick with it. Same thing with Orange is the New Black. Piper makes me crazy so I just gave up. I’ve watched season 1 of Daredevil and Jessica Jones because my love of superhero stories over powers my distaste of rated-R television. I don’t watch any of the other popular grown-up shows like Game of Thrones or Walking Dead or the political one every jokes about that I can’t recall.

Mainly, I like shows I can watch with my kids. Specifically Nyoka because Wes prefers using “TV time” to watch YouTube videos about minecraft. I watch a lot of sitcoms, they’re the ones I stay caught up on. Brooklyn 99, New Girl and Modern Family. I watch a lot of superhero television. I haven’t kept up with Arrow the last few weeks because it pissed me off and I’m waiting for it to move past a certain storyline but Supergirl, Flash and of course iZombie (comic book origins so it counts as a superhero show) are my faves.

I tell you all of this because I’m probably going to be in bed most of today. I’ve either got the worse case of allergies I’ve ever had or I caught a terrible cold/respiratory infection in the shortest time possible last night. I basically woke up at midnight and have not stopped coughing and sneezing since. Fastest onset of any disease ever. I plan on staying in bed most of the day and I want suggestions on TV shows I should watch. I thought about going Daredevil 2 since I can’t watch that one around the kids but I haven’t had anyone I trust confirm I’ll like it. Donnie said I will but sometimes he just WANTS me to like something so bad he turns me towards it and I’m worried. Season 1 was almost too gory for me, and I’m terrified something bad is going to happen to Foggie.

So…I’m in bed wishing I was dead. What should I be watching?

  1. I hope you feel better soon!

Have you watched Gilmore Girls? It’s one of my favorites. The dialog and family dynamics are great, and if she hasn’t seen it I bet it’s something you and Nyoka could enjoy together. Or How I Met Your Mother?

I thought Daredevil was pretty gory, too, but I somehow can’t stop watching.

  2. We have pretty different TV show tastes, except for the superhero shows. I’m loving Supergirl and Flash! I like a lot of detective type shows. The NCIS shows are my favorites. Some newer ones that have come out that I like are Limitless, Blindspot, Quantico.
I also stumbled on some older ones that have been out for a while like I really love – Castle and Bones.

  3. I recommend The West Wing to everyone who asks for one. I have watched the 7 series about 10 times and Joshua Malina has just started a weekly podcast where they discuss each episode so now I am going to have to watch it again

  4. I second the Gilmore Girls rec, if you haven’t already watched it. It’d be right up your alley.
I did watch season 2 of Daredevil, and if the first one was too much for you, gore wise, this one will probably be too much for you. It’s about the same, overall, with the gore, but they show it a little more graphically. Not as much innuendo as to who gets hurt how, if you know what I mean.

I don’t watch many, if any really, sit coms, most of the shows I watch have to be an hour long, since I record everything or hulu and netflix it.

  5. I think sickness calls for comedy. Try “The Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt” on Netflix. If you have Amazon Prime and want something a little more serious (but there are moments of comic relief), “The Newsroom” was AWESOME. For superhero stuff you haven’t already seen… “Heroes” was pretty good. Not sure who may have that. I watched it as it was being shown, so haven’t had to stream it.

  6. I love iZombie!! I cannot get enough of that show and am so upset that next week is the season finale. I second The West Wing. It has great dialog, interesting politics, some great characters. Freaks and Geeks would be a great one day binge watching show since it only lasted one season.

  7. This probably won’t work for today but I suspect you might love “The Real O’Neals”

  8. For current comedies the grinder and fresh off the boat are good. Older shows I chime in with the rest for west wing and Gilmore girls.

  9. Without spoiling anything, if you liked Season 1 of Daredevil, you should definitely watch Season 2! I was wary because I thought they were adding too many characters this season, but it worked out fine. There’s a spot of goriness and some animal endangerment, but (okay, maybe this one IS a spoiler) you won’t be mad you watched it. You also might want to check out Blindspot. It’s not a comedy, but even though they’re usually dealing with serious stuff (terrorism, government conspiracies) it is SO not a serious show (if that makes any sense). And the characters explain stuff that just happened and is about to happen a million times so it’s probably easy to follow even if you’re sick.

    Get well soon!

  10. Sense8, girl!!! DO IT NOW! 🙂

seriously, you’ll LOVE it, and donnie prob will, too! PROMISE, PROMISE, PROMISE!!! it might take 2-3 eps to really get into it just b/c of how the story is laid out, but you’ll never regret sticking with it. if you read about it online (briefly, not any spoilers!) you’ll see what i mean, i’m sure. but the message of the show? LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! and it’s SO unique…nothing else quite like it out there!

and you should know by now that i have a very good idea of what kim likes, and my suggestions for you will be spot on at least 99% of the time! 🙂 so, i can’t wait to hear what you think! 🙂 XO

    1. Seconding Sense8!

Also, if season 1 of Daredevil was gory for you? Season 2 is worse. Fantastic storyline. But they ramp up the gore for sure.

  11. Netflix – Grace and Frankie, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt (sp?), and my new all-time favorite Parenthood. The first two I would not watch with your younger kids – older would be fine. Parenthood you can definitely watch with your kids – just bring some tissues. Other suggestions – Broadchurch and a BBC suspense with Gillian Anderson – The Fall? I’ll look it up if you are interested.

  12. One more vote for Kimme Schmitt.

Also if you like a little feminist political commentary Samatha Bee’s new show is amazing. Similar to the Daily Show but more biting than Trevor Noah’s iteration and with a focus on feminist issues. It’s called Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and it’s on TBS.

  13. I love the Flash and I think we have pretty similar tastes. I can’t stand things that are too gory, so CSI is out for me.

Have you watched Season 1 of Agent Carter (from the Marvel universe)? It’s on Netflix and EXCELLENT. I haven’t watched Season 2 yet b/c I’m waiting for it to get to Netflix, b/c I want to binge it. I can’t stand waiting a week between episodes.

Season 2 of Daredevil wasn’t as good as Season 1, but it was still ok. There are 2 separate storylines that never came together and I couldn’t figure out why the writers would do that. It just didn’t make sense.

An “R” rated show that is HILARIOUS is “Catastrophe” on Amazon. Many laugh-out-loud moments.

You should also check out “Master of None” on Netflix, starring Aziz Ansari. I love that show, it has so much heart. The main character is NOT a “man-child” but a really decent person trying to figure out his life. His real-life parents are in the show as his parents and his dad is so funny. I never watched Parks and Rec but I may have to try it now b/c of Aziz.

I enjoy Limitless on CBS, but I’m not sure you can watch from Episode 1 and you really need to start at the beginning.

The Grinder on Fox is good, too. Rob Lowe’s character is an actor who quits his lawyer-TV show to move back home, where his brother and father are real lawyers. He tries to help with their cases, much to his long-suffering brother’s dismay. It’s an old-fashioned sitcom that I really enjoy.

Good luck! I hope you feel better!

  14. I agree with the Sense8 recommendation (I heart Wolfie!)- but know that the ending is cliff-hangery (is that a word?)- they are supposed to make season 2 (soon?)- but hey, that just means you can binge watch it again before that!!

  15. Your previous commenters have great taste, but I was rushing over here to tell you to watch Daredevil season 2, so I’ll third or fourth that recommendation. It’s really good. I liked it better than season 1, I think. And also, yes to Blindspot and the Grinder. I love Rob Lowe. Have you watched all of 30 Rock and Parks and Rec? Those are my go-to sitcoms that I watch over and over. Master of None is another good one someone else mentioned.

  16. The Middle, Modern Family, The Goldbergs….LOVE these sitcoms!
We started watching Jane the Virgin (on either Netflix or amazon Prime I can’t recall which) and it’s a HOOT!

  17. I want to second the suggestion for Agent Carter. I think you’ll really like it. Goofy superhero-esque show (it kinda has a Buffy vibe to me). The main actress is FANTASTIC! I love her so much. Such a wonderful, strong female character. The link to superheroes is that she was the girlfriend of Captain America. And Iron Man’s dad (Howard Stark) is one of the side characters (the show takes place just after WWII). She’s a CIA-type agent working in New York and putting up with a lot of sexist crap.

For sitcoms, I’ve really been loving Blackish. Funny with interesting social commentary. If you like Modern Family, I think you’ll like Blackish.

    Feel better!

  18. “Once Upon a Time”, “Blindspot”, “Sleepy Hollow” and “Stitchers” and I 110% agree with the “Gilmore Girls” recommendations; ALL the love for that show! Feel better soon!

  19. I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I love Modern Family.. glad to see you like it too. I recommend Downton Abbey. No one has said that yet, but it’s the best show EVER. EVER. EVER.
